PERSONALITY
MUSICIAN | WANDERER | KIND give someone a guitar and they're going to use it. cricket loves music, it's why they chose their name. cuz, y'know, crickets make music. so do they. they've got a siren's voice, maybe, although there's not a hint of supernatural blood in them as far as they can tell. if it skips one generation - werewolf and witch blood - it managed to skip cricket's entire branch of the family if it's somewhere in them. nah, they've just got a good voice and a damn good ear.
they play covers! they write their own music! they put their guitar case out front and sit on a bench and play their damn heart out and hope people'll give them money enough to manage.
cricket's a gentle soul, really. rebellion and fierceness is carefully cultivated in them; their growls and sass are always forced. they befriend the bugs and have a deep kind of patience. left to their natural devices, they wouldn't ever speak up. but life's harsh and hard, so they've built a little shell. a shell that'd crack easily, sure, but enough to keep them alive and stubborn. they aren't naturally stubborn, but - but they'll be stubborn enough, damnit, mark their words.
they've got a wanderlust in them, deep inside. an eternally-changing goal. something's calling to them, though they don't think the call's ever been supernatural. there's a whole world out there! they'll stick to new orleans. still, it's in there, building. there's some kind of purpose to them, there's gotta be. they just have to figure it out.
like anyone, cricket's got some lofty dreams. they wanna be famous one day. they wanna be there in creating some kinda peace between the supernatural beings and humans alike. all the hate they've gotten, the struggles they faced - they don't hate people back. they just want people happy, you know? happy and at peace.
maybe some day. for now, they'll just keep playing their music.
HISTORY
they've never had a good relationship with their family.
not really their fault though, you know? family's homophobic and cricket's gay as they come. even as a kid they avoided gendered clothing. none of it felt right, none of it was right. they came out asap, the instant they knew that 'neither' was an option.
their siblings laughed. their parents scowled. they insistently called cricket based on their parts. only thing was, cricket talked to a doctor - they were intersex. didn't explain everything, didn't suit them much either - there was still so much defined under the binary - but it explained a little bit 'bout why their mother and father talked about medical lies. kid-cricket didn't have a name yet - the name their parents gave them was never their name - but kid-cricket had the seeds planted.
wasn't... wasn't all bad. wouldn't hurt so much if it was all bad. would've been better if it was all bad. cuz cricket had a talent, even when they were small. they picked up music as easily as breathing, and their parents got them instruments and lessons so they could sing and play. their guitar is still their prized possession, covered in stickers and kept as pristine as possible.
they came out before supernatural beings did. and when supernatural beings did: whew. they lived up to the queer stereotype of associating with monsters, huh. babadook's a gay icon and, like, witches and werewolves and vampires and stuff literally call themselves outsiders. outside looking in, that's cricket.
so fourteen years old they made a plan to hightail it to louisiana where all the party people were the day they turned eighteen. it became illegal and louisiana stopped being part of the us, but their plan didn't change.
eighteen years old, three weeks from their birthday, they've managed to cross the border and make their way to new orleans. the sights, the city, the culture - they could be somethin', here. maybe. sure. heart in their throat, they've got a plan and they'll see it through.
